Medical help for the residents of the Roma district in Mitrovica, January 25, 2008
U.S. Office in Pristina continues with its assistance to all communities Kosovo-wide. In the course of recent field visits, our medical staff learned that one of the most acute health issues that the Roma community in Mitrovica has been facing is an influenza outbreak, for which the local clinic providing health assistance to the Roma mahala residents had not had enough means to suppress. Therefore, the USOP, in cooperation with the US Embassy in Belgrade, has obtained 60 doses of flu vaccine to be donated to the clinic in Roma mahala in Mitrovica.
The USOP efforts to help the most destitute in Kosovo do not end there. The USOP Medical Unit regularly performs medical checks of the children from Roma mahala in Mitrovica suffering from the consequences of lead poisoning. The U.S. Government financed full medical treatment for 33 children during 2006 and 2007, while a total of 350 children were tested for lead poisoning. This program will be continued this year as well.
